The Confederation of British Industry has called on the government to publish detailed plans in the spending review on how it will realise the£20bn savings sought under the efficiency review.

CBI director general Digby Jones said that without complete transparency, the review process would be futile.

'Government departments and agencies should publish their detailed business plans, setting out key milestones for delivery,' said Mr Jones.

'I urge the government and Parliament to commit to an ongoing independent audit and evaluation of any efficiency gains made as a result of the Gershon review.'
