Birmingham City Council's Urban Design Service has won a major construction

industry award for commitment to excellence in construction.

The city council was named alongside the British Airports Authority (BAA)

as 'Client of the Year' for its record on encouraging best practice in

construction projects by the industry body Constructing Excellence.

The awards were for organisations making a major contribution to rethinking construction and encouraging best practice over the past five years. The city council and BAA were the only clients to receive awards.

Urban Design, part of the city's development directorate, is a fully

integrated design and maintenance organisation providing high quality

services to a growing portfolio of clients within the West Midlands region.

Urban Design offers building design, maintenance, management and

environmental solutions through structured and comprehensive service

delivery procedures and through the experience and skills of over 220

staff.

Urban design general manager Steve Vickers said: 'In forming urban design

and in our proposed partnerships with contractors, staff have been involved

in innovative and collaborative ways of modernising the construction

process. It is satisfying to be recognised by the industry for this.'

Cabinet member for regeneration Andrew Coulson said: 'This is

another accolade for urban design. They are already ranked in the top 250

design and construction consultancy practices and top 100 architects in the

UK, so this is further proof that they are providing a excellent service to

the city council and other clients.'
