Reigate and Banstead BC has clashed with Surrey CC over the county's planned waste management deal with SITA (GB) (LGC, 4 June).

Reigate and Banstead policy and resources chairman Richard Bennett claims the 25-year contract will see his borough become 'the rubbish dump of Surrey'.

'I am shocked that the main county proposal is to build a massive incinerator in Redhill,' Mr Bennett said.

'It is only a few years since we managed to defeat plans for such a development after a public inquiry and now we find Surrey CC wants this borough to accept responsibility for burning over two-thirds of the county's waste on the same site. They must be joking.'

But Surrey rejected the claims, insisting the plan was for an energy-from-waste facility, not an incinerator, at Redhill.

County environment director Richard Shaw said: 'While it is absolutely fair to raise questions about the environmental impact of any of these proposals . . . it should be remembered that all these issues will be considered fully.'
