There was cross party rejection at Cleveland CC of the commission's proposals for Cleveland today and called for a unitary authority for Teeside.

A statement issued read: 'The commission's decision to continue with the proposal for four unitary authorities is indefensible in the light of its clear rejection by more than two thirds of those questioned in the MORI poll'.

'The Local Government minister David Curry has warned against the creation of joint bodies. Yet the commission is proposing a structure which will mean joint arrangements for over 60 different services.'

'We are absolutely confident that when ministers consider this report in the light of overwhelming evidence against the Commission's recommendations thay will act to prevent this area being doomed to second class status and second class services'
