Cleveland CC chief executive Bruce Stevenson today welcomed many aspects of the announcement by Environment Secretary John Gummer on the future of the Local Government Review. Mr Stevenson said that in a number of key areas Mr Gummer's proposed revisions to the commission guidance 'underline the strength of the case for a single Teesside authority - for instance the clear recognition that the review procedure can lead to the creation of larger unitary authorities'.

Mr Stevenson added: 'The indication from the Secretary of State of the importance of local consensus and the need for the commission to measure proposals from local authorities against views from outside local government is also welcome, since we know that the commission has received very many arguments in favour of the Teesside case from virtually every section of the local community, for instance the business community, the health service and the voluntary and community sectors.'
