The Daily Telegraph (January 11, p2) reported that school meals staff settled a£4m dispute over equal pay, paving the way for similar agreements across the country.

The agreement involves 1,500 women who worked for the former Cleveland CC. They had taken action after Cleveland failed to consolidate their bonuses into basic pay, unlike male refuse collectors and gardeners.

The unions and the four councils which took over Cleveland's responsibilities - Redcar, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool are still working on the detail of the agreement.
