The Independent (p6) reports on yesterday's decision by the government to accept final recommendations of the Local Government Commission to abolish Cleveland CC and replace it with four unitary authorities.

The paper comments that outside of the Isle of Wight this is the first commission decision to be accepted by the government.

Last night, Cleveland CC - who has applied for leave to seek a judicial review of the way the commission makes its decisions - urged the people of Teesside to 'rise up and protest' against the decision. They pointed to the local hostility to the proposed move and the petition signed by 25,000 people calling for a united Teesside.
