Ian Wingfield, who stood down as Labour's prospective candidate for Wirral South at the weekend, yesterday resigned as chief whip at Southwark LBC, reports the Daily Mail (p11).

Mr Wingfield has denied allegations that he beat his ex-wife and a former girlfriend, and blames left wing opponents of waging a vendetta against him.

A full local party inquiry is being held into the allegations.
