Don Price has been elected deputy leader of Newcastle City Council after a three-way contest at the annual meeting of the Labour group.

The Journal (7 May, p2) quotes 'one high ranking insider' saying that Cllr Price's election on the second round of a knockout ballot was 'not a vote for unity.'

The post of deputy has been vacant since John O'Shea quit following an expenses probe. Council leader Tony Flynn was not challenged.
