People in communities devastated by pit closures have been warned not to expect miracles from the Coalfields Task Force, reports The Journal (p15).

Members of the task force visited County Durham yesterday and explained that they could only try and influence the government, they had no money to spend.

Durham CC leader Don Robson welcomed the task force however. He said: 'This is the first time we have had a positive strategy to bring all the parties together.

'It's a very exciting day for the North-East.'

The task force will hold a public hearing in Durham next month and a national conference will be chaired by deputy prime minister later this year to launch an action plan.

- Wansbeck DC has called for an end to universal capping to enable more cash to be spent on reviving former pit communities.
