Slough BC has replaced its old coasters, printed with the names of beers or cigarettes, with new plastic mats carrying the five key policies of the authority, reports the Daily Telegraph (p7).

The new mats, costing£150, were introduced after several Labour members objected that the old mats presented councillors as beer swilling cigarette smokers.

Liberal Democrat leader Richard Stokes told the paper: 'I find it unbelievable that so much time can be devoted to something this trivial.'

But a council spokesman said: 'The old coasters presented rather a dated and irrelevant image. These harder wearing mats were produced in-house.'
