Closed circuit television cameras for Bicester and Kidlington have been given the go-ahead, reports BBC Oxford.

All cameras will be state of the art colour cameras which operate effectively at very low light levels. Additional cameras are also to be installed in Banbury.

Cherwell DC's environmental committee has approved the installation of five cameras in Bicester town centre and two in Kidlington central shopping area. It also agreed to three additional cameras in Banbury, making a total of 13 and extending cover to the railway station and the Spicebowl area.

The cameras will transmit high quality pictures to the operations room at Banbury Police Station from all the camera sites in the three towns.

Cost of the £260,000 scheme has been met by the district council, Bicester Town Council, the Home Office and nine local businesses.
