The EU Committee of the Regions is to celebrate the anniversary of its first year by holding a conference in Edinburgh next month.

The conference, organised by the Confederation of Scottish Local Authorities, will be addressed by CoR president, Jacques Blanc, European Parliament vice president David Martin and Scottish Office minister Lord Fraser of Carmyllie.

COSLA president Rosemary McKenna said the role of councils in Europe was never to be under estimated.

'We have an important role to play in the European scene because local government spends significant amounts of EU grants and implements European legislation in areas such as social policy, the environment, public purchasing and trading standards', she said.

She added that the 'conference will give us the opportunity to share experiences, review the year's work, discuss our different countries' views of the CoR and look to the future of local and regional government in Europe'.

The conference takes place on February 8.
