The government last night won a Commons vote on the sale of ministry of defence married quarters after defence secretary Michael Portillo offered a range of concessions to army families to appease rebellious backbenchers.

The Times reports (p1) that ministers hope to raise up to £2bn by selling and then renting back some 58,000 army homes to one large developer.

Bids for the homes must be in by the end of July and the sale is expected to go ahead in mid-August.
