Margarett Beckett, the former trade and industry secretary, is to head a Labour party 'hit squad' aiming to win back control of Liverpool City Council from the Liberal Democrats.

The Daily Post (5 Oct, p11) reports that the leader of the commons has been appointed head of party campaigns and will now mastermind the campaigns in the local and European elections next May.

She said Liverpool is the party's toughest test but resources will be directed at the most 'at risk' areas.

'It will be a tough challenge but with a determined campaign we are confident we can do well,' she added.
