With hundreds of campaigners set to lobby parliament today to save their local hospitals, the Liberal Democrats are publishing figures showing that 27 community hospitals are under threat.

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Evan Harris said: 'Community

hospitals perform a vital part of the NHS's job. Shutting them because of financial deficits makes no sense. In the long run, waiting lists will rise and primary care will suffer. So closing community hospitals is a huge false economy.

'These local hospitals offer vital services:

- Respite care that reduces hospital readmissions

- Recuperative care that cuts down bed blocking and re-admissions

- Rehabilitation that cuts down the burden on social services

- Alternative to admission care that reduces waiting lists

- Terminal care that is inappropriate in acute hospitals

'Today we are calling on the government:

- To impose an immediate moratorium on cash-driven closures of community hospitals which ignore local patient needs

- Hold an immediate independent medical audit of the NHS by the Audit

Commission, to assess accurately what hospital services are needed and

where. This information is currently unavailable centrally.'
