At LGC’s community engagement conference yesterday, communities and local government secretary Hazel Blears was due to announce an extension of the system of participatory budgeting allowing residents to determine local expenditure to new service areas like health and the police.
Pilot schemes have been run in 22 areas, with more expected in coming months. The aim is for all councils to give residents the chance to decide which projects are funded by 2012.
