Housing minister Sir George Young today published for consultation regulations government the way the compensation for tenants' improvement scheme is run.

In a written answer Sir George said that the regulations, which have also been issued in Wales involves a new mandatory scheme here council tenants can be compensated for carrying out worthwhile home improvements once their tenancy ends.

He continued: 'The scheme will apply to improvements, once their tenancy ends. In line with the Citizen's Charter this new right will benefit all council tenants, and provide them with a valuable incentive to improve their homes.'

A similar scheme is to be consulted upon for Scotland.
