Birmingham City Council is considering traffic policies that could include charging motorists £1 for every trip into the city centre.

The Birmingham Post reports (p1) that charges would be totted up on a microchip 'smart card' fitted to cars. Sensors under the road would detect the card and mark it every time it passed.

The Conservative opposition have attacked 'anti-car' polices which they say would cost jobs and turn Birmingham into a ghost city.
