Birmingham city council leaders have rejected accusations of hypocrisy after congratulating the government on its latest spending settlement, reports the Birmingham Post (p3).

Labour councillors voted through a resolution congratulating the government for changes in the way council grants are shared out next year, despite having to make cuts of£10m and an estimated seven per cent rise in council tax.

Liberal Democrat leader David Luscombe said: 'We shouldn't be congratulating this government for making cuts in Birmingham.'
