Today leading LGA members and the Pre-school Learning Alliance (PLA) agreed to work together to emphasise the importance of early education.

LGA and Alliance recognise the need for a distinct early years phase of education, which is developmentally appropriate for young children.

Graham Lane, chair of the LGA's education committee said, 'We need to ensure that the building blocks are in place for early education which suits the age of the child. We will work with Pre-school Learning Alliance and other partners to ensure children do not enter schools too early'.

Margaret Lochrie, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance said, 'We welcome the forthcoming education select committee inquiry into early years education and look forward to giving evidence alongside the LGA and others'.
