Responding to a call from the Secondary Heads Association for school league tables to be overhauled, Theresa May, shadow minister for education, said:

'It was right to bring in league tables but now we need to move forward. The Conservatives will publish value-added league tables that enable parents to see clearly what progress their child is making over a period of time in a particular school.

'That means knowing the point from which the child starts, which is why we will publish for all schools the reading and maths results of key stage one - information which the government is currently keeping secret.'
