A consultation paper which considers the criteria to be applied to the assessment of sites for the housing in Scotland of the Stone of Destiny was issued today by Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth.

On the same day that files relating to the stone were released for scrutiny, Mr Forsyth said that the consultation exercise would allow the views of all interested parties and individuals to be taken into account.

Mr Forsyth said:

'The prime minister's announcement to parliament on July 3 has generated an enormous amount of interest and comment in Scotland. I am very pleased about this because the return of the stone is a significant event for all Scots, but I am eager that we should focus now on the various criteria to be satisfied by the possible sites. That is why I am issuing this paper at this time.

'I am arranging for it to receive the widest possible circulation so that the views of experts, interested parties and members of the general public can be carefully considered. I am confident that this consultation will assist greatly in bringing matters into better focus.'
