Tower Hamlets LBC refuse collectors and street cleaners employed by contractors...
Tower Hamlets LBC refuse collectors and street cleaners employed by contractors

Onyx, who are soon to transfer their employment as the contract changes to

Cleanaway, have voted unanimously to campaign for a London Weighting of

£4,000. Over 200 staff, all members of the Transport and General

Workers' Union, have supported the claim as part of an overall campaign for

parity with directly employed council workers.

Paul Fawcett, T&G regional industrial organiser, and spokesman for the Tower

Hamlets workers, said,

'There is a strong determination that the claim is a justified one which

will go a long way to resolving differences in payand conditions between

workers providing public services through private contractors and those who

are directly employed. Such differences are, in our view, unacceptable.

'We want to resolve this matter through negotiations but our members resolve

is such that they will not rule out taking industrial action.'

The current contract with Onyx in Tower Hamlets is due to end in November.

The workers involved will then transfer employment to Cleanaway and the

campaign will continue.
