Durham CC has criticised the contracting out of public library services, reports The Northern Echo (p4).

Libraries should stay within local authority control, the council has said in response to a survey of the British library service commissioned by the government to investigate if could be improved by setting up independent contracts to run different aspects of the service.

Durham's libraries director Patrick Conway said the service would be weakened by being divided into sections and as all libraries in the county are connected, it is easier to arrange loans and maintain stocks, the paper reports.
