Conversions of redundant non-domestic buildings into social housing will be free of VAT, chancellor Kenneth Clarke has announced.

Draft legislation had been published with immediate effect which would enable the VAT-free sale of any dwelling created by the conversion of a non-domestic building, he said.

The Chartered Institute of Housing welcomed the move.

Principal policy officer Jason MacGilp said: 'The housing construction industry can and should be the engine of recovery, and this measure will provide a little fuel.'
