Conwy CBC is trying to solve a cash shortfall by offering more than 1,000 white-collar staff a week's unpaid leave.

If approved by the full council and the unions, the unpaid week will be offered to staff up to director and chief officer level. The proposal was a response to the unions' refusal to accept redundancies, and is designed to save Conwy up to£250,000 in the coming financial year.

The council and unions say in a joint statement: 'Following constructive negotiations, both sides will recommend that staff formerly described as 'white collar' take five days' unpaid leave, thus providing the sums required to meet the present deficit and avoid the proposed redundancies.'
