Cornwall Care is to appeal against an industrial tribunal ruling that it unfairly dismissed nearly 250 care staff. The non-profit making firm, set up in 1996 by Cornwall CC to take over its 18 homes for elderly people, dismissed the care staff then rehired them the next day on worse pay and conditions.
A tribunal decision last week ruled that the original employment contracts were never terminated and that the workers were entitled to their original conditions (LGC, April 25).
The company announced this week that the board had taken a unanimous vote to appeal against the ruling.
Chief executive James Robinson said: 'The board wanted a quick decision. Clearly speed is important in ensuring that our residents and staff suffer the shortest possible period of uncertainty.'
