Cornwall CC chief executive Geoffrey Burgess retired on October 8 on medical grounds, the Western Morning News reports (October 9 p7).Mr Burgess, 58, has been chief executive for the last 11 years.

In a statement he said: 'My health has been deteriorating for some time and last year my doctor strongly advised me to retire on health grounds. I chose to carry on because there was much important and urgent work to be done in preparing the council for the considerable changes that local authorities are facing.'

Finance and administration director Stuart Nicol will be acting chief executive until a successor is appointed.
