The Corporation of London today made a last ditch attempt to overcome Smithfield traders' opposition to improvement plans for the famous meat market, the Evening Standard reports (p23).

Officials are facing legal action over a multi-million pound refurbishment needed to meet EC hygiene laws and are planning to bypass the Smithfield Market Tenants' Association - and appeal directly to individual traders for support for the next stage.

Michael Cassidy, the Corporation's head of policy and resources told the paper he was determined to break the deadlock.
