Democratic accountability for companies involved in public services should be considered, New Local Government Network executive director Dan Corry has said.

Mr Corry told a Labour Party annual conference fringe meeting: 'While the private sector must recognise that a public service ethos is necessary for anyone wanting to deliver public services, the public sector cannot use 'ethos' as a means to resist change.

'We should consider whether private provision of public services requires some sort of pseudo-democratic accountability structure, perhaps involving advisory or scrutiny stakeholder boards,' he said.
