The government's tight control over public spending will continue under a Scottish parliament, Treasury chief secretary Alistair Darling warned.

Mr Darling stressed the government's continuing commitment to sustainable long-term growth and stable public finances.

The Scottish people will expect the new parliament to work in partnership with Westminster, he said. 'And just as Westminster will have to work closely with Holyrood, so too will Holyrood have to work in partnership with councils.'

Scottish Office officials were working with the Treasury to ensure a smooth relationship, he said. 'The Scottish parliament represents a radical vision. But delivering that vision depends on determination to work towards the same goal.'
