Essex CC, cutting budgets by up to £25 million this year, has spent £7,OOO on a personalised numberplate - ECC1.

The Times (21 Sept p5) reported that Chelmsford MP and junior health minister Simon Burns accused the authority of 'wasting money on its vanity'.

But, said the paper's motoring editor, the council might have made a canny investment.

Two numberplates it already owns, F1 -the first issued in the county - and 1F, could be sold for up to £50,000 each.
