Corporate governance was a key theme at LGC Communications' Pensions and Public Responsibility Symposium in Bournemouth in June.

Humberside CC finance director George Southern spoke of 'a tremendous rising cross-party pool of feeling'. He called for more openness from fund managers in dealing with companies, asking: 'Is the relationship between yourselves and some companies too cosy?'

Hertfordshire CC treasurer Chris Sweeney agreed that strong views crossed the political divide, but said there was a big leap from the moral argument to actually voting.

'I have seen very little evidence to show that increased investor activity will have an impact on returns,' he said. However, he also called on fund managers to play a more active role.
