The Highland Council has retained a contract, worth£14 million over four years, which will safeguard the jobs of 960 cleaners. Commercial operations, the in-house direct service organisation, has been awarded contracts for council building cleaning at Inverness, Badenoch and Strathspey and Nairn; Ross and Cromarty; Lochaber; Skye and Lochalsh; Sutherland and Caithness.

The contracts were awarded by the council's client services board, who also considered bids from three private companies.

Roy MacIntyre, chairman of the direct services board, said he was

delighted that the in-house bid had proved to offer best value to the

council following rigorous evaluation of costs, quality and ability to

deliver the service.

He said: 'This again demonstrates that our in-house contractor is able to compete with the private commercial operators for major work. The news will be particularly welcome to our workforce, at this time of year.'
