Southampton City Council has quickly moved up the ranks into pole position in a recent IT planning services review. The Pendleton Review assesses how easy it is to navigate around the planning information pages of the council's website, City Web.

In 2004, the council was ranked 272 for the accessibility of its planning IT. In a year the planning department have worked hard to secure joint first place.

People can now submit, track and comment on planning applications online, looking at plans of current applications and recent decisions and also any details of applications which have been to the Planning & Rights of Way panel.

Internet users can also get advice on how to make a planning application and learn about planning matters, which may affect their future building works.

The new IT system checks properties within Southampton on a map to highlight any policies from the Local Plan and details of the new Local Development Scheme in those areas.

Councillor Jill Baston, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport said: 'The results of this review are extremely positive and encouraging. It's now quicker to find out what you need to know about planning applications now they can be tracked from home.

'The new planning website is a real improvement in communication between the council and the planning public.'
