Gillingham BC's withdrawal of £55,000 annual support will lead to the closure of an award-winning tourist information centre which is the first call for many overseas visitors arriving in Britain, reports The Guardian (p4).

Kent CC has also been unable to guarantee funds for the Farthing Corner tourist information centre on the M2.

The paper reports that Gillingham has also decided to withdraw funding for other types of tourism promotion. It points out that only one in every 11 inquiries at the Farthing Corner centre related to Gillingham.
