Under the provisions of section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972 a person who is employed by a local authority is disqualified from being elected to or being a member of that local authority (WA, 12 July, col499).

Outgoing environment department junior minister Tony Baldry confirmed that under section 116 of the same act, a person cannot be employed by an authority for 12 months after he or she ceases to be a member.
