Newcastle City Council does not intend renewing a 10-year waste disposal contract over fears that one firm is gaining a monopoly on landfill tipping in the region, reports The Journal (p13).

Gateshead MBC is negotiating the sale of Tyne Waste to Northumbrian Environmental Management which has won contracts with Northumberland and Cleveland CCs.

Newcastle councillors fear the deals could leave NEM with a 'virtual monopoly' of landfill sites in the region, allowing the firm to bump up prices in the future.
