A council's in-house building company has won a lucrative£15 million housing maintenance contract, after noprivate companies applied for the job, the Yorkshire Post reported yesterday (Jan 6, p4).

Sedgefield BC invited five companies to tender for the five-year contract, including its own works and leisure department. Officials were so shocked at the lack of response that they had the private firms interviewed anyway.

'We were very surprised, because we felt a contract like this would have been very attractive to these companies', said John Litherland, the council's director of planning and technical services. The contract has secured the future of 70 council employees.
