Senior council officials will ask Michael Howard, the Home Secretary, for compensation for emergency cover in the event of a walk out by their employees in November, reports the Daily Telegraph (p10).
And they will call for permission to honour the index-linked pay formula for the fire service in a meeting with him today, it says.
A joint statement was made by Jeremy Beecham, chairman of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities and Josie Farrington, chairwoman of the Association of County Councils policy committee.
It said the associations are committed to the 15-year-old index- linked formula, which is not to be scrapped and will be paid in full in 1994.
They will tell Mr Howard that the costs of deploying civil defence Green Goddesses will far exceed any savings achieved by suspending the fire service's index-linked formula for 12 months, the Daily Telegraph reports.
