Council-run public transport is being underfunded by almost £2bn, according to research by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Northern Echo reports (p4).

Local authority public transport organisations are underfunded by £1bn for the transport network and £900m for maintenance, the ICE claims.

ICE vice chair Tony Ridley said: 'These survey results must be a source of anxiety for all concerned with the future of transportation in this country'.

The research revealed that most councils saw public transport, in particular buses, as the area in greatest need of investment, the paper reports.
