Local authority roads and country lanes in Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland have been listed as the worst in the country by the department of transport, reports The Independent (p2).

The statistics are contained in the DoT's National Road Maintenance Condition Survey, published yesterday. The report shows that 4,600km of local authority streets need immediate attention.

Other areas with badly kept non-trunk roads include London, the East Midlands, and the north-west.
