Commenting on the government's standard spending assessments for local authorities, Unison general secretary Alan Jinkinson said:

'The government's onslaught on local government spending is a catastrophe that could create civic chaos.

'Cash-squeezed councils will have to unleash colossal cuts which will rebound throughout the economy as employment falls and life-sustaining support services are slashed,' he said.

'Council tax payers face huge hikes in their bills to pay for the Chancellor's multi-million pound disappearing act. And the most vulnerable people in our communities - the young, the old and the infirm - will suffer as education staff, home helps and other caring public service workers are sacrificed in a budget blitz on services.'
