Cheshire CC is seeking a meeting with six other local authorities over the Halifax Building Society's issue of shares to the mentally disabled, reports the Daily Post (p6).

Cheshire has invited representatives from Staffordshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Durham and Hereford & Worcester CC's to a meeting to discuss possible action. The direct intervention of health secretary Frank Dobson has been sought in a battle to gain full share entitlement for 47 people in the council's care.

The Halifax has insisted that mentally disabled customers should have a nominated signatory and will only pay one share issue to that nominee, the paper reports. The building society denies discrimination and said many disabled people will receive free shares.
