A North Tyneside councillor has declared that his authority will 'marshal all its resources' to ensure plans to develop an opencast mine fail, the Newcastle Journal reported (Aug 6,p12). This follows an announcement by Chesterfield-based Coal Contractors Ltd that they are to take their previously rejected plans to a public inquiry.

Both North Tyneside MBC and Northumberland CC threw out the plans earlier this year after a deluge of protests from householders. They claimed the site would be a blot on the landscape and a blight on their lives.

A spokesman for the developers said: 'Having reviewed the council's grounds for refusal of planning permission, we do not believe they were justifiable', the paper reports.
