Easington DC leader Derek Thompson, who was badly hurt in last September's Southall train crash, hopes to be back at work in the next few weeks.

Mr Thompson suffered crushed vertebrae in the crash in which six people were killed, including Easington's tourism development officer Ged Traynor.

Deputy council leader Alan Napier and cllr Alan Lockyear, who were members of the council delegation travelling from a Coalfields Communities Campaign conference when the accident happened, are also making good progress, The Northern Echo reported (10 Jan, p3).
