Manchester city council has launched a poster campaign reminding parents of three and four-year-olds to claim their free nursery education vouchers from the department of education and employment.

The council's chairman of education, Mark Hackett, said: 'The government's nursery voucher scheme is full of pitfalls and is quite likely to confuse parents and possibly deny some four-year-olds the very education which the government is promising them.

'Manchester CC has a proud record of education provision for under-fives and is committed to maintaining this in the future.

'But we will only be able to do this if all parents ensure first of all that they claim their vouchers and, secondly, that they hand them in to their child's school - to ensure that schools don't lost any vital money which is essential to maintaining the current high level of service and provision'.

Once the voucher scheme comes into effect, from April 1, the government will cease to give authorities grants to provide education for four-year-olds in council-run schools.
