Violence at work rose by 110 % in the ten years to 1991, a study out today shows, reports The Times (p5).

More than 90 % of attacks come directly from a public increasingly defiant of authority, according to the study by Incomes Data Services, an independent monitoring company.

Violence listed in the study includes local authority staff being attacked with shovels or held up at gunpoint, the paper reports.

Even where staff are not physically threatened, the study says, verbal abuse and threats can wear them down, leading to absenteeism, poor morale and high turnover.
