Liberal Democrats have selected Newcastle upon Tyne city councillor Lembit Opik to contest the Montgomery seat after the decision of Alex Carlile to stand down, reports The Western Mail (p1).

The constituency is the only Liberal Democrat held seat in Wales.

Mr Carlile said: 'Mr Opik is one of the most able young people available in British politics.'

While Mr Opik told the paper: 'My first priority is to keep my mouth shut and my ears open and learn from Alex Carlile, and to get to know the constituency.'
